Greymouth is perfectly situated to explore the west coast - but you definitely need your own transport! There are lots of things to do in the area but if you're on foot only like I was it's a bit limiting. Definitely walk out to the viewing platforms at the mouth of the river where it meets the Tasman sea. Also check out Monteith's brewery for a tour - you get discount by booking at the iSite! If doing the trail recommend staying at Bella Vista and having dinner at the Recreation Hotel just up the road.
The roast is fabulous. You can even order half portions which are just right if you don't want a large meal. Wonderful service. Recommend, if starting trail from Greymouth, to cycle over the Greymouth Bridge and do the cycle trail there making sure you cycle around the Cobden Aromahana Recreation Centre near the beach.
So pleased we didn't miss this before going back over the bridge. Awesome cycle way and walk way with interpretation along the river's edge and great historic interpretation of the town.
Excellent cafe just under the flood banks on the town side of the river. Lots to do nearby. Good spot to experience some 'real' west coast people and rugged scenery and mining history. Greymouth is a wild place. The sea is scary and the memorial to fishermen who have lost their lives here is moving. My husband being a miner himself found the memorial to the coal minors who have died in the mines in the area very interesting and extremely moving. Boxing day was probably not the best time to visit Greymouth as most businesses where closed. We only stayed one night and still saw most of the city.
I would say the best place to eat would be is Speights Ale House. It made a great base for sightseeing along that stretch of the west coast. There is really no good reason to stay in Greymouth. The flood wall blocks the only appealing aspect of the town. It may be safe now but walled in and, well We were only looking for somewhere to stay for the night on our way down the west coast. Greymouth Motel is what you would expect of a motel. Parking was available right outside our door, which was great. The property is adjacent to a family home. The owners were very friendly and gave us a very warm welcome.
They were very knowledgeable about the area and generously shared many ideas about where to go and what to do in and around Greymouth. The space was well laid out, cosy and clean. The fresh bread, eggs, honey and jam were a delightful touch! The hotel added items to the inventory that made the room extra special. There was a bottle of wine, 2 glasses, refrigerator bar, fan, milk, to name a few. We arrived late and hadn't eaten.
The kitchen was closing, but the owners had a meal prepared anyway. Paroa Hotel goes the extra mile for their guests. The food was delicious! Good location, walking distance from rail station possibly the main reason many people are in Greymouth and walking distance from the Main Street and Monteiths brewery. We went on West Coast cycle trail so worked out well for us. We were able to leave our car there until we returned.
The trail goes past Top 10 along the beach front. Room comfortable cosy bed and clean room.
Very helpful staff. We had a good and comfortable stay at the Ashley Hotel, our room was very spacious and had a lovely feel. The staff were great! Was the perfect place to sleep for our 1 night in Greymouth. Thank you! Perfect location. Big, clean unit with lots of room. Bed was very comfy and the staff were super friendly! Will definitely stay again when we come back to Greymouth. Pretty cool experience. The Caravan is comfortable and clean.
The host is really friendly and can teach you a lot about New Zealand. They have a really good piano, some really good guitars and everything else is just perfect. The best Hostel I've been to in New Zealand. Will absolutely return next time in greymouth.
