A visit to the Karioitahi Beach with its black sand in the morning held a surprise - for not only were the thoroughbred horses exercising there but also vans with trotters soon appeared and also began to exercie along the beach. Waiuku is an easy going community with almost all the facilities you would normally expect - incuding banking, shopping,eating and entertainment.
Because of the nature of our stay, we obtained food at the Fish and Chip shop, UK Cafe and the Chinese Takeaway shop - all of which provided excellent meals and service.

Waiuku is very easy to get around because of the layout of the town and most places are within easy walking distance of the centre of town. The only place that provides any source of irritation is the Fire Station which has a siren to summons the volunteer firefighters - which is irritating when it sounds in the middle of the night.
Fortunately most places of accomodation are well away from the Firestation. Lovely beaches, Great craft shop at Pollock run by really friendly ladies. Great trip on the steam train at Glenbrook Railway. The Awhitu Regional park is ideal for picnics and and swimming. Shires Restaurant has lovely evening meals as the pub can be rather noisy.
The lighthouse is worth the drive. A quiet little town where you feel pretty safe, has everything you need in walking distance flat, easy walking , and only 10 minutes drive to a gorgeous wild kiwi beach. If you enjoy just relaxing, having brunch at cafes and going for walks at the beach then this is a great place for that.

Close to the sea like moments away from you, argriculture hub 5 mins to strawberry farms - history surrounding you not far to the ligthhouse on the manuakay harbour or to enjoy a stream train ride at glenbrook vintage railway. Waiuku is a growing town ideal for all walks of life, families, couples, singles, young and old.
Its small enough to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the quiet country town, allowing you to soak up all its incredible history. If you are staying within the township you will find everything is within walking distance. Wonderful friendly people. Great west coast beach for nice long walks. Not to forget the vast choice of fine dining, cafes, fast foods and great shopping.
