Parihaka is so named because in the early s local Maori, who had their pa at the summit, performed a haka to insult and frighten their enemies, the attacking Waikato tribes. The warriors emerged onto the paringa pari -steep scarps and cliffs around the pa - to dance their defiance. Unfortunately the locals were defeated, though the name Parihaka, commemorating the battle lived on.
In the twentieth century the mountain became erroneously called Parahaki but the name was corrected by the New Zealand Geographic Board in The well maintained mountain tracks wend their way up through the bushcovered slopes of the ancient volcanic cone, with wooden staircases at the steepest points. Many tracks lead up Mount Parihaka, Whangarei nikau and cabbage trees, while soaring above are rimu, totara, matai, tanekaha and kauri. On the left is a memorial plaque to the botanist Norman Drummond who donated 24 acres of bush in the s. The Ross and Dobbie Tracks are also named for locals who gifted land on Parihaka to the council. It takes around 40 minutes to walk the 1. There are stunning views out across. The final part of this loop follows the river, along the Hatea River Walkway. This is a peaceful, shady track, popular with families. Children love to feed the ducks that gather near the footbridge. There are a good variety of long and short walks within the reserve, which is also a popular camping and picnic spot, with plenty of facilities available.
There are a number of walks you can do. The Bush Chapel Walk that has been classed as a must see is a short walk that starts besides the first campsite amenties block. There is a lot of very old large tall trees and plenty of different ferns for you to look at, as well as the bird life. How to get there: Totara Reserves is Camping: There are two camping grounds in Totara Reserve, one large site that is attached to Camp Rangi Woods and one smaller site across the road. Amenities on site include toilets, showers, drinking water, BBQs, powered and unpowered tent sites, 12 caravan sites and river access.
There are toilet and shower facilities with wheelchair access at both camp sites. A total of 64, hectares of conservation land in the Mokihinui River catchment on the West Coast north of Westport, including 15 km of riverbed, is being added to Kahurangi National Park.
