An attempt was made to obtain information as to the value of the materials used during the year, as well as of the produce of the manufactories or works, but with only partial success as to the value of the materials used.

Important machinery and plant being used in the above works, they are included in the tables. The Act requires the returns to be made. In making comparisons with tables for other colonies it is necessary to look to items, as it is somewhat a matter of opinion what should be included in the compilation of industrial statistics. There is difficulty in defining what works should be included and what omitted. For example, some of the furniture factories consist of large workshops in the rear of shops, in which several hands are employed making furniture ; but there are numerous cabinetmakers who also employ one or two hands making furniture, and yet whose works could hardly be classed as among the manufactories.

There are many industries in a similar condition, so that no hard-and-fast rule could be laid down, otherwise many industries that are in the aggregate of considerable magnitude and are of growing importance would have to be omitted, or the table filled up with the enumeration of what are in reality retail businesses combined with a limited amount of work done on the premises either by way of repairs or as new work.
