This was a lucky dip on our road trip and we were pleasantly surprised by what we found! For those that don't know, Oamaru is the Steampunk capital of NZ! The Steampunk HQ is a must see, If your a nature lover with lots of patience, wait and watch the free blue penguin parade. Had dinner at Portside, Great food and service will go back. Went for a look around the Victorian quarter , was good but could do with opening about half an hour earlier , and a few more food venues would be good. We found it quite easy to navigate around town,. Spent two days in Oamaru as I was keen to see the historical area in particular.
Also very impressed by the cathedral once we found it. We were also able to travel further south for one day which made us want to return to enable us to trael to the deeper South.

Good restaurants and cafes. Loved the wide streets in the town area. Historic town features a lot of activities for diverse group. Many options for various activities, could spend more time.
